Executive Director

As the NBMA Executive Director (ED), you will play a multifaceted and vital leadership role in guiding the organization's continued growth as a 501(c)(6) member association.

We are seeking an individual who is deeply committed to NBMA's mission, self-motivated, able to work independently, and skilled at serving as the central point of coordination between the Board of Directors, administrative staff, accountant, consultants, and key organizational partners.


Details

Job Type: Executive Director (1-year contract with opportunity to renew)

Time Commitment: Approximately 35–40 hours per week

Location: Remote with occasional travel

Probationary Period: 90 days

Objectives of This Role

  • Work closely with the Board of Directors, staff, and contracted individuals to advance NBMA's mission while developing program objectives and strategic operations.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with allied organizations, colleagues, and external partners.
  • Direct daily operations and provide executive leadership for NBMA's programs and quality assurance.
  • Identify staffing needs and foster a positive work culture that attracts and retains talented individuals.
  • Increase public awareness of NBMA by strengthening the organization's visibility, supporting council initiatives, and supervising the Social Media Intern.
  • Develop and implement a fundraising plan in coordination with the NBMA Board Treasurer.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Work closely with the NBMA Conference Coordinator and Conference Planning Committee, providing oversight of conference fundraising, sponsorships, and budget management.
  • Collaborate with all NBMA Councils to ensure they have the documentation, historical knowledge, and organizational support needed to operate effectively.
  • Oversee NBMA's social media presence by responding to messages and providing direction to the Social Media Intern.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and work closely with the Board of Directors to advance NBMA's mission, vision, and long-term goals.
  • Oversee day-to-day organizational operations, including administration, programs, staff, financial management, and fundraising.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Board by providing updates, recommendations, and organizational reports.
  • Lead fundraising efforts by cultivating donors, pursuing grants, building partnerships, and meeting annual fundraising goals in collaboration with the Board.
  • Ensure the organization's financial health by overseeing budgeting, monitoring finances, and working closely with the bookkeeper to maintain fiscal accountability.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs that support NBMA's strategic priorities.
  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for NBMA, representing the organization with members, partners, funders, policymakers, and at conferences and public events.
  • Lead organizational strategic planning and oversee implementation of key initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, nonprofit best practices, and organizational policies while proactively managing organizational risk.
  • Foster a collaborative, equitable, and mission-driven organizational culture that supports staff, volunteers, and members.
  • Establish performance metrics and provide regular reports on organizational progress and impact to the Board and key stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, public administration, business administration, healthcare administration, public health, or a related field required. 
  • Master's degree preferred. An equivalent combination of education and relevant leadership experience may be considered.
  • Passionate advocate for Black midwives, Black maternal health, and birth justice, with a demonstrated commitment to advancing Black communities.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of nonprofit, executive, or organizational leadership experience.
  • Proven experience working collaboratively with a Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, funders, and community partners.
  • Strong leadership, strategic planning, organizational management, and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, donor stewardship, partnership development, and revenue generation.
  • Experience managing organizational budgets, financial reporting, and fiscal accountability.
  • Excellent written, verbal, public speaking, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to lead multiple initiatives in a remote work environment.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and commitment to collaborative leadership.
  • Grant writing experience preferred.

Operations Manager

The NBMA is seeking a motivated and experienced interim Operations Manager for a contractor role at a pivotal moment of new growth for the organization. The Operations Manager will have the essential responsibility of maintaining the engine of the organization, ensuring the day-to-day operational soundness of the organization, reporting directly to the Board and supporting, liaising, and coordinating with all other arms of the organization, including membership councils.

Key Responsibilities

Maintain the day-to-day operations of NBMA, including:

  • Oversee administrative and operational functions to ensure organizational effectiveness.
  • Manage organizational data, systems, documentation, and operational policies.
  • Supervise interns, volunteers, and staff while fostering a collaborative, mission-driven work environment.
  • Coordinate meetings and support communication between staff, committees, and the Board of Directors.
  • Manage and enhance membership operations, including member support, application processes, membership platforms, and the member portal.
  • Oversee NBMA's website, digital platforms, and organizational communications, including supervising content development as needed.
  • Monitor operational budgets, provide financial reports, and collaborate with the Treasurer on operational finances.
  • Provide administrative support for committees, contracts, payments, and key organizational initiatives.

Technical Skills

  • Highly organized with high-level attention to detail.
  • Proficient in managing and using basic digital tools (e.g., Google Workspace, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint, Zoom, social media, etc.). 
  • Familiarity with meeting scheduling tools and common work productivity apps and tools.  
  • Good meeting facilitation skills.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic graphic design skills (using design tools such as Canva) and basic video editing skills are a plus, but not required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in management or related field OR proven equivalent through relevant combination of training and work experience. 
  • Not currently an active-practicing Midwife, nor living the on-call lifestyle. 
  • At least 2 years prior experience in a similar role or in an administrative/operational management function.
  • Prior experience working in the nonprofit sector and/or closely with social/reproductive/birth justice missions.
  • Transparent and high-integrity leadership.
  • Clear and demonstrable alignment with NBMA’s vision and mission and/or demonstrated Black midwife advocate.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • High-level strategic thinking and planning; ability to grasp and take key organizational visions and integrate them into operational processes. 
  • Collaborative communicator with a strong team spirit.
  • Experience with people management.
  • Solid organizational and project management abilities, including macro- and micro-level planning, execution, tracking, and reporting.
  • Experience managing budgets.
  • Ability to work well remotely.
