The NBMA Lanieyah Setticase Memorial Scholarship honors Lanieyah Setticase, a doula, birth justice organizer and advocate, and aspiring student midwife who passionately believed in the rights and voices of young mothers of color and left an indelible mark on the communities she served across the Miami, Florida area. In her work with the Southern Birth Justice Network, NBMA’s parent organization, Lanieyah worked to increase community access to holistic perinatal health care and support. She was a proud single mother of four resilient children, beloved daughter, and loving and devoted friend to many. The goal of this scholarship is to continue to serve the population she so passionately cared and advocated for. The Lanieyah Setticase Memorial Scholarship awards $2,500 scholarships to Black student midwives who are in good standing in their midwifery studies and are single parents. In 2024, NBMA awarded two of these scholarships and made the announcement at the NBMA 2024 Conference.

The NBMA Nonkululeko Tyehemba Scholarship honors Queen Mother Nonkululeko Tyehemba who was a master midwife, mother, community activist, and co-founder of the Harlem Birth Action Committee and who left an incredible impact on the communities she served and worked with. The Nonkululeko Tyehemba Midwifery Scholarship awards $5,000 scholarships to Black student midwives whose community service is commendable. The scholarship will support recipients with midwifery training or education expenses or to obtain skills or support that would help them further their community service work. In 2022, NBMA awarded two of these scholarships.
